Coffee, Tea, and Beer

Coffee, tea, and beer are three things that played a major role in my life this last semester.  Well, at least, a major role in my life within my horticulture class.  It goes like this...One assignment was a group project in which we had to form a hypothesis, carry out an experiment, record results, and make conclusions.  So my group chose to apply beer, tea, and coffee as fertilizers to tomato and zinnia plants.  We compared the results of these fertilizers to plants that were fertilized with Miracle Grow.  Why did we chose beer, tea, and coffee?  Well we knew that more often than not flat beer goes down the drain on Sunday mornings and tea and coffee grounds just go into the trash.  Since we knew each of these beverages contained nutrients required by plants for growth and development, we decided to test them on plants.  Also, when one searches online, there are gardening sites that suggest ways to incorporate coffee, beer, and tea into uses on your garden.  We did not use any of these recipes.  Instead, we sprinkled grounds, beer, and Miracle Grow on to groups of plants.  In the end, the plants that were fertilized with Miracle Grow grew the tallest.  We knew these plants would grow well.  The plants that were fertilized with coffee grew taller than those given beer and tea.  We expected the coffee to do well but we also expected tea and beer plants to be more successful than they were.  Now that I have seen the affects of these leftover beverages on tomatoes, I may start using coffee grounds on my tomatoes that I grow during the summer.  Since I am not a coffee drinker, I will be getting my coffee ground from Starbucks because a few years back Starbucks started a program called Grounds For Your Garden.  This was something we learned about when researching for our project.  In all, the experiment was took time, but I did learn from it and it was kind of fun.  Just thought I would share this tid-bit of information.

I Feel...

a little hippiesh yet trendy!  Why?  Well...I got feathers in my hair!  Yes, feather extensions are all the rage right now and lots of girls are getting them.  So I had to be a follower and get one like everyone else, but I am actually quite independent.

My feathers aren't too noticeable,

 but they are there and pinned to the side with my bangs.

A while back a friend from out of state had one, and I loved it.  I have been searching high and low for a hair dresser near me to put feather extensions in my hair since...and my searching did not go well.  However, things changed this last Tuesday at 5:15a.m.  I was sitting in the break room before we opened the Rec when I noticed my co-worker had a feather extension.  I couldn't help but blurt "where did you get that?"  Of course, my question would have left many wondering what I was referring to but she knew I was asking about her feather because she said "I have the girl's number, it's five dollars, she'll meet you anywhere."  So as soon as I was off work I texted "The Feather Girl" and asked about getting a feather extension.  She responded  by saying I could meet her at one by the bookstore.  I was so excited because I had spent months searching for a feather putter-inner, and just like that I was a few hours away from having my very first and own feather extension. 

So my friend went with me to meet up with The Feather Girl.  The whole deal felt a little sketchy because I didn't know who this girl was or she was capable of doing.  The whole process of putting a feather in my hair took a whole five minutes.  The whole process was done just as fast as the deal had gone down. 

I really like my feather extension.  It's fun, wild, and different, but I do feel a little hippiesh with it!  What has college done to me?  Well, it's made more confident and less afraid to express myself, which I consider to be good things.  Right?  Anyway, I am happy with my two black and white feathers and one brown and red feather, and I can't wait to try a more bold extension in the future!

Mom's Weekend

This last weekend my mom came for WSU's Mom's Weekend 2011.  I love Mom's Weekend! I love it because it is so nice to be able to spend a whole weekend relaxing and having fun with my mother.  My mom got to Pullman early Saturday afternoon and left early Sunday afternoon, which meant we got a whole 24 hours together!  It was great having one on one time with her because it let just us chat, giggle, and be silly together like best friends.

As soon as my mom arrived, we went to a Mother and Daughter Tea and Spa.  It was SOOOOO relaxing and the massage felt SOOOOO good and the cheesecake was SOOOOO yummy!  I'm certain my mom and I would agree that this was the best part of the weekend.  After we were done being pampered, we went to the arts and craft fair on campus.  I love these types of things!  I love looking at all the cool stuff people make.  These people are creative and make some really pretty things.  I got my mom and I matching spoon rings again this year.  This is my little tradition for us.  Last year I got us matching rings and I will continue to do so until I graduate.  Next, we went to one of my friend's apartment for a jewelry party.  Can you say "girl heaven"?  Well just imagine.  My whole weekend was a girl heaven weekend because it was tea, desserts, massages, jewelry and more jewelry and makeup.  I got a cute pair of earrings at my friends party.  Then we quickly took off to meet up with my other friends and their mothers for dinner.  But before that we stopped at Macy's and bought makeup.  At this point, girl heaven just got better because I love makeup and could not keep my hands off of all the pretty stuff.  After making our purchases, we met up with the others for dinner.  Dinner was good with lost of visiting and laughing.  We finished Saturday off by going to a concert, but we were so tired from our busy day that we just kind of sat there watching in a daze.  We did like it though because the music was relaxing.  We definitely weren't up for rockin' out.

Sunday morning we got up bright and early so that we could go to the plant sale.  WSU has the best plant sale and you cannot get better flowers or tomatoes for your garden anywhere else!  My mom and I loaded up the back of her Suburban with plants.  She was so excited to pick out plants.  We bought plants last year but not too many because she drove her little car.  This year she wanted to buy a lot so she drove the Suburban, and we filled 'er up!  Next, we got a quick breakfast.  Then we headed to the grocery store for tissues.  Except, we came out with much more than tissues.  You know how that goes, right?  Well if you don't that's okay, but as a warning don't ever let my mom or I lose in a store because we will buy everything.  Haha!  We bought candy, pop, food, and WSU gear first.  Then we remembered that we had actually gone to the store for tissues.  So back in we went.  So that is a typical trip to the store for us.  But there was this really cool basket that we took turns pulling.  It was a new experience for us!  A grocery basket on wheels!  It was cool and I wanted it for myself...but mom said no.  Once we were done at the store, we went back up to my dorm so that I could send home stuff with my mom.  We had to squeeze my boxes of stuff in since the Suburban had recently become a garden on wheels.  And all too quick Mom's Weekend came to an end and my mother went back home and, again, I stayed in Pullman.
